God is a God of discipline. At times, He finds it necessary to discipline us. Discipline is going through the fire. We must be willing to accept discipline. I remember my grandmother, who nurtured, raised and disciplined me. I must admit that I was not always willing to accept her discipline, but soon discovered that it was for my own benefit. That is how God disciplines us: for our own good. We need it and must be willing to endure it. Hebrews 12:9 is our scriptural devotional reference today.

“Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?”

The writer of this passage of scripture speaks of the willingness to be disciplined. He writes, since we had fathers who disciplined us, we should be more open to the discipline from the Lord. Discipline is inherent in sonship. As a father loves us, he recognizes the need of our discipline. Every gift we received is wrapped in discipline. The Lord disciplines those He loves. He loves us with a love that will never let us go. His discipline is for our own good. If we were left without discipline, we would self-destruct. In other words, it is essential, and we need it. Thank God today that from our discipline, our lives are made stronger in the Lord and we are saved from making a mess out of our lives.
