THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Thank God for the power of the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit guides us into all truths. It is our comforter and our guide. It is the power we need to sustain us through all our trials and troubles. The Holy Spirit is also our source of strength when we are weak, and it brings us joy in the midst of sorrow. It gives us hope when all hope is lost. We have been given the promise of the Holy Spirit to abide with us always. This is made known to us in the gospel of John 14:16. The words read in this manner:
“And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever.”
Here we have Jesus the Master Teacher speaking to His disciples telling them if they love Him, they are
The Master prays on their behalf that they will receive the promise of the Spirit. This Spirit will be called the spirit of truth because it comes from God expressing His reality. They will also be given power by the Spirit to do great things in His name, and if anything is asked in His name, it shall come to pass. This Sprit makes intercession for us even when our prayers are feeble; the Spirit interprets them and takes them to the throne of grace. This Spirit is guiding me now as I write this devotion, because I realize how inadequate I am without the Spirit. But thanks be unto God not only does the Spirit guide me as I write this devotion; but it also guides me in preaching, pastoring, praying, and in seeking to do His work and will. It guides me as a husband, a father, grandfather, and as a friend. In all things, the Spirit enables me to bear witness to the miraculous power of God.
