THE MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE
The title of this devotion is the motto that the United Negro College Fund uses. It references to use your mind, intellectual growth, to study, to be prepared, to gain knowledge, and to be equipped with formal education. These things are true. Nevertheless, I would argue that besides the academic emphasis, our spiritual reference also applies. Do not allow your mind to be wrought with sinful and evil thoughts. Have the mind of Christ. Do not allow your mind to be contaminated with hate. Rather, fill your mind with godly thoughts. So one thinketh, so he is. In other words, do not have a dirty mind but a clean and pure mind that honors God. The scripture reference is Romans 8:6 and reads:
“So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”
Paul speaks of life in the Spirit. He indicates that those who are dominated by a sinful nature think of sinful things. But those controlled by the Holy Spirit think of things that pleases God. Paul realizes that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. He knows that the sinful nature is always hostile to God. As we live in the Spirit, we have the mind of Christ, and our lives are lived in a way that glorifies and honors God each day. Paul writes that the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us. Paul is deeply concerned that our lives be lived in a way that they reflect the Spirit and love of God. Do not waste your mind on things that do not pertain to God. Rather, let your mind be in Christ and allow the Lord to guide and lead you every step of the way.
