When I went to bed at night as a young boy, I said a simple childlike prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.” I have said that prayer so many times. In addition, I am grateful that as I have grown and matured as a man, I have come to realize that whether asleep or awake, the Lord watches over us. That ought to cause us to shout! The loving eyes of the Lord are always upon us. His arms are always stretched out to embrace us. Psalm 121:7 references the Lord watching over us.

“The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.”

The psalmist declares that the Lord is always watching over us. He knows that He will preserve our soul and keep us from all evil. The psalm is filled with confidence and trust in the Lord. The Lord is thy Keeper and the shade upon thy right hand. The psalmist recognizes God’s love and power to protect and guide. He knows his help comes from the Lord, for which he is thankful. Rejoice! The Lord will keep us in our coming and going, not for a brief time, but forever more, for we go nowhere that His eyes are not upon us.
