The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven
As a child, I was given some Bible verses to recite for my Sunday School class. Some of the verses required a theological point of view. As a child, I did not have a full understanding of what that meant, nor did I understand all of the bible verses that I recited, but today’s scripture lesson is simple. It speaks about humility. Humility is the mark of a true believer. In Matthew 18:4, we find these words:
“‘So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.’”
We are God’s children. Notice that verse 5 tells us how children are to be treated. This scripture teaches us that if we really want to be great, then we must humble ourselves. This is radical teaching, for the Master does not view greatness as having power, authority, titles, wealth or fame. One who is humble is placed on a high pedestal in the Kingdom. Often we confuse humbleness with weakness. But remember, the Master said in Matthew 5:5 ‘Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth…’ God will exalt those who are humble as the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
