THE GREAT “I AM”
God places an awesome responsibility on us, to speak on His behalf about who God is. No one is adequate enough to truly describe God. We try, through sermons, meditations and devotions, to paint a picture of Him. In reality, we cannot begin to describe God’s greatness, because He is high and lifted up. Even in these devotions, I have talked of Him as being The Way, The Shepherd and The Door. But we could spend a lifetime and not scratch the surface of who God truly is. In Exodus 3:14, we find these words:
“God replied to Moses, ‘I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.’”
God told Moses to speak to Pharaoh and to the people of Israel. In verse 13, Moses said to God, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, “The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?’” In verse 14, God answered Moses, saying,“I am who I am.” Wow! It is a short, simple and clear answer, not a long dissertation of any theological perception. In Revelations 1:8, God is described as “the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end… the one who is, who always was…the Almighty One.” This is one of the greatest descriptions of God. Whatever you need Him to be, that is who He is: father, mother, friend, helper, comforter, or guide. The Great “I Am” is the name to be remembered by all generations!
