Spiritual Nourishment

As I began to write this devotion, I thought about something one of our callers said during our early morning Church Without Walls prayer service. The caller indicated that the prayer service was our spiritual breakfast. Those words were deep and profound, for in reality, prayer is our spiritual nourishment. We spend hours exercising and giving thought to eating nutritional foods. Both of these are important; however, our spiritual nourishment is equally important. I recommend that we also pray, read devotions and God’s Word daily, and draw closer to God. We need all the spiritual nourishment we can get, because the trials of life can drain us dry. In Nehemiah 8:10 we find these words:

“And Nehemiah continued, ‘Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!’

The people were gathered for worship. As they were eating and drinking, they were compelled to not just consume mere bread, but rather to feast on the Lord. They were celebrating, remembering how the Lord had provided for them and richly blessed them. It is my prayer that as we eat the food that sustains us from the table that we will also take time to ensure we are being nourished spiritually.
