Small Things

The Word of God is powerful! As I was preparing this devotion, I pondered how
to bring these words to life. This is one of the more challenging scriptures that we find in the Word of God. It requires wisdom, discernment and the revelation of the Lord or else we might miss its meaning. We live in a society where everything is measured by its size. The bigger, the better; and, in some cases, small things have little or no significance. However, there is much to be discovered when we dig deep into God’s Word: there is no such thing as a small sin, or even a small blessing. In Zechariah 4:10, we find these words:

“‘Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand…”

Zechariah notes the gigantic task of raising Jerusalem from the rubble and rebuilding the Temple. He knew that human strength and energy were not enough. Only through divine power could they complete such an awesome task. Verse 6 says,  “ … by my Spirit, says the Lord .” Let us always seek the things that God has for us, no matter how small they may seem. He rejoices in the small strides that we make.
