SLAVE TO SIN
Each day we are faced with the challenge of freeing ourselves from sin. I would argue strongly, no matter how much faith and trust we have in God there are still some sins we commit that cause us to be enslaved. At one point we heard the apostle Paul say, “When I would do good evil is always present, things I don’t want to do, I find myself doing, sin still has me in its grips.” Jesus is the only one who can set us free from the bondage of sin. We cannot do it on our own, for the flesh is weak. Thanks be unto God; whom the Son sets free is free indeed. This matter of being slave to sin is nothing new, for in the John 8:34 we find these words:
“Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.”
Here John, the gospel writer, records words spoken by Jesus. Christ is the emancipator and He alone has the power to snatch us out of the grips of sin. Notice how the writer speaks about being a slave: that is to say, that sin can rule us, imprison us, and be lord over us. Again, the Master says that everyone who believes in Him shall be set free. It is my prayer today, whatever sin enslaves you, that you will allow the power of the living God to set you free. Break free from the shackles that seek to bind you. Lose yourself from the strongholds that seek to destroy your life. Begin today to ask God to give you freedom. What a wonderful way to live: free from the hands of sin’s hold.
