Here we are in the month of August and some of our January goals have already been put aside. It is essential to have a purpose and plan for our lives. We need to set goals beyond education and finance and begin to set spiritual goals. Set a goal to develop a more intimate relationship with God. Yes, we have made gains but we need to continue striving and achieving. Our scriptural lesson for today’s devotion is found in Philippians 3:12.

”Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”

In this compelling passage of scripture, Paul writes that there are things that he has not yet attained, and, he is not perfect. His goal is that he continues to reach toward those things that are before him. To do this, Paul had to let go of some things in the past. In other words, forget what lay behind and press toward the mark of the high calling of the prize in Christ Jesus. He does not want anything to mar his forward moving, so he must forget some of those things. He presses toward the mark. He makes a commitment toward the mark. He does this one thing. Paul realizes he is not fully matured. He is transparent and does not think of himself too highly. Powerful words from this servant of God can be applied to all of us who claim to be followers of the Lord. May you continue to strive for excellence in your walk with God?
