Service Above Self

I have written before about the blessings of being involved with the Blue Bell Rotary.  Rotarians are known throughout the world as great humanitarians.  Their motto is “service above self.”  In my humble opinion, Rotarians have discovered the real meaning of life, because sometimes we who are Christian believers put ourselves above service.  In other words, we develop an attitude of “what’s in it for me?” rather than “what
can I do to help someone else?”  Whatever we do should always be for the glory of God. In Philippians 2:3, we find these words:

“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.”

Paul admonishes the Philippians to get rid of all selfish motives that are not aligned with the will of God.  He tells them that as Christians they should practice humility, and count others more significant than
themselves.  He wants them to have the same spirit of sacrifice and love of Christ that he has.  We should read this chapter, then ask ourselves, “Is the work we do for our own self-satisfaction or are we doing it out of our love for Christ and His people?”  Prayerfully, we will all be able to say that we are placing service above self.
