We must be sensitive to God’s Word for it provides instruction for our lives. Consequently, we must both read the Word and apply it to our daily lives. The Word will always have something to say about our journey in this life. No matter how many times you read the same verse, God will reveal something new to you every time. We cannot afford to look at the things around us and become insensitive to God’s Word. Our hearts, ears, and minds must be open to receive what He has in store for us. Corinthians 4:18 is our text today:

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

Paul sums up the Christian outlook with regard to the events and circumstances of this material world. He was aware that the triumph of evil is only temporary. So are the honors that material success brings. However, the unseen things such as the love that God has for us and the victory we have in Christ is what we must always be focused. He wants his fellow believers to know that worldly things are only temporary. Things unseen include the realities of faith and Christian fellowship and the life of the spirit. Paul said the things we do not see are eternal. In other words, set you mind on heavenly, godly things, build your hope on things eternal. Hold to God’s unchanging hand. Don‘t get caught up in this materialistic world. Not all that shines is gold. I will add that we should ignore material blessings for they also come from God. However, they cannot be what we put our hope in for they shall pass. Only God’s love is eternal.
