We can never do anything for the Lord unless He grants to us His power and presence. That is why it is essential that we pray for discernment. I would argue strongly that far too often we seek to serve the Lord without consulting Him first. There are many challenges that await us as we seek to honor the Lord with our service. As we turn to God, He will grant to us the wisdom and knowledge that we need. Understand clearly that we cannot do anything on our own. Yes, we can do things through Christ who strengthens us. Therefore, we pray earnestly and honestly that God might direct us. The scripture lesson is I Kings 3:9.

“Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”

In this deep passage, Solomon sought wisdom from God. Solomon loved the Lord and followed all His decrees. Yet, Solomon knew that he could not do anything without discernment from God. So, he prayed that God would give him understanding to know the difference between right and wrong. The Lord is pleased that he has asked for wisdom and says, “Because you have asked for wisdom, and have governed my people with justice and have not asked for long life, wealth or the death of your enemies. I will give you what you asked for.” I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or will have. I will give you what you did not ask for: riches and fame. Read this powerful portion of scripture in the third chapter. Whatever you seek to do, pray for discernment. God will grant it to you in the same way He granted it to Solomon.
