PLEASANT WORDS
I know that I have written a devotion similar to this before, but I’m led by the Lord to write this again because of its importance. Sadly, I have heard people speak negative words to each other for various reasons. We must learn to discipline ourselves so that the words that flow from our hearts and our lips are pleasant. It is important that our words edify each other rather than destroy. Something can be said that can damage another person for a lifetime. That is why it is important that we ask God to give us the words to say before we speak. I am sure that there have been words spoken to each of us that have not been pleasant, or perhaps we said something to someone else that was not pleasant. If the latter is true, we should ask God’s forgiveness. In Proverbs 16:24, we find these words:
“Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”
One who is wise will speak words that give God glory and strengthen the life of all of God’s people. I know how I feel when pleasant words are said to me. On the other hand, I know how it feels when unkind words are shared with me. There is a saying that many of us recited as children: “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” I have found that this is not true, for I have been hurt by many unpleasant words. Thanks be unto God that I have been helped and healed by many pleasant words.
