OUR SUBSTITUTE
It is hard for us to comprehend how a Holy God could love us so much that He sent His only Son to die on a cross as a substitution for our sins. We cannot put into words the magnitude of God’s love for us. He who knew no sin bore our sins. This gives us reason to shout and rejoice over the knowledge that God Himself stood in the gap for us. We are left speechless over this incredible act of love and mercy. This truth is made known in the Holy Writ, for in II Corinthians 5:21 we find these words:
“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”
Paul, in this writing, tells how reconciliation is made possible. The mere fact that Christ never yielded to temptation, knew no sin, and was a substitution for our sins gave Paul reason to rejoice. It is not enough to say God reconciles us to Himself. Rather, He made the reconciliation possible by taking the sins of humanity and paying the awesome price of a Son on the cross so our sins might be forgiven. Christ bore the consequences of our sins in His own body and in His own death. There was no other way by which God could deal with the self-willed and self-centered sin of people. No one else could pay the awesome price. It is not in His death that we rejoice but in His life. Because Christ lives, we live. Let’s rejoice! That fact alone should call us to worship, and thank and praise His holy and righteous name. Thanks be to God for the great love given us through His Son.
