We can never ever get to the point in our lives when we feel we have grasped all of the teachings from the Word of God.  It requires a great deal of growth and faith to comprehend the Word of God.  Sometimes we grow in one area and become lax in other areas.  For example, some of us have learned to give sacrificial offerings, we tithe, we fast, and we attend worship.  But, when it comes to following God and listening to His voice that is when we fail.  For some reason we like to sing that song “I Did It My Way”.  However, we are called upon to obey the Lord.  We do not use the word obey very much anymore, but the Word of God, in I Samuel 15:22, tells us clearly that obedience is better than sacrifice:

“But Samuel replied, ‘What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice?  Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.’”

Now I know there is already a thought in the mind of some that this is Old Testament, but it is still true today that obedience is better than sacrifice. This verse really seeks to criticize to some degree those who place sacrifice before obedience.  Samuel took great delight in offering God sacrifices as he obeyed the voice of the Lord.  In verse 20 of this same chapter, we see where Saul told Samuel that he obeyed the voice of the Lord. There is a penalty involved when we disobey God and when we are unwilling to follow His command.  It is so tragic that although Saul was bound to live by the light he had received he went against his own conscience.  Sometimes we are able to see the struggle Saul had, because we too are not always able to listen to what the Spirit says.  The songwriter said, “Trust and obey for there is no other way”.  Prayerfully you will see the need to put obedience before sacrifice.  They go together: obedience first, sacrifice second.
