Losing Our Lives

Sometimes we have to lose our lives, meaning give up things that we value, in order to gain a Christ-like life. Losing our lives to gain a Christ-like life is not in keeping with the world’s standards. We seldom hear of anyone losing their life to gain a Christ-like life or to be a blessing to others. However, that is what we are called to do according to the Word of God. In Matthew 16:25, we find these words:

“’If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.’”

Matthew is saying to lose is to find. These words are not merely good advice, they are the truth. ‘“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?’” (Mattthew 16:26). In other words, we may have the rich resources of life, yet our souls may still be lost. We may appear to be fulfilled, but material things alone cannot satisfy our souls. In Matthew 6:33, we find, ‘“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.’” The Master is not suggesting that we cannot have material goods. We just need to remember the importance of keeping Him first in all that we do, so that our lives will be blessed.
