KEEP YOURSELF FROM IDOLS
There are all kinds of idols in the world. As God’s people, we need to keep ourselves free from all idols. We might not have a golden calf as an idol, but many other idols have lured us away from God. They include money, fame and people. Sometimes idols come in forms we do not anticipate. Before we know it, the idol has become our god. There are many false images and we are all vulnerable to being swayed. We must always be on guard and not allow ourselves to be overtaken by idols. The scripture serving as our devotion today is found in I John 5:21:
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”
This scripture contains a warning. In John’s world, idols have lured people away. The warning is that we, as God’s children, also need to keep ourselves free. Idols refer to unreal and untrue objects of devotion. We need to guard ourselves from being taken away from our devotion to the True God. It is God, and God alone, who is the source of all our blessings. We cannot be caught up in idol worshiping; but must be real, true and authentic in our worship to Him. Prayerfully, you have heeded that warning and are worshiping the only one True God. May God’s blessings continue to be in the life of His people. May we always have a spirit of discernment so that we can rightly know the One True God.
