Keep Yourself from Idols

Today’s devotion has relevance in our lives.  We may not worship golden calves, but we may worship other idols and not even be aware that we are worshipping them.  We tend to make celebrities and even preachers our idols.  However, the reality is that no one should take the place of our God. We should only worship the one true God. In 1John 5:21, we find these words:

“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.”

One of the things that struck me about this verse was the words “Dear children.” This speaks about the love God has for us.  God loves us so much that He wants us to stay away from idols.  The word “idols” refers to an image worshiped as a god, in this case an untrue god.  John has a way of speaking about the love of God.  Through faith in the Son of God we come to know Him who is true.  We have been warned to keep ourselves from any idol, idol worship, or anything that would place something or someone before God.  The question that confronts all of us today is, “Are we worshipping the one true God or are we worshipping an idol?”  There is a vast difference. Prayerfully, our worship is real and our God is, as found in Ephesians 4:6, “One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in all.” (NIV)
