When we say we love the Lord, it is much more than a saying. Loving Him requires serving Him and keeping His commandments. Love is an action word and expressed by the actions that spring forth from our lives. We know this truth; we cannot love God who we have not seen and not love those we see every day. On the other hand, we cannot say we love God and do not keep His commandments. In fact, the Lord Himself makes it clear, if you love Him then you ought to keep His commandments, as recorded in John 14:15:

“If you love me, obey my commandments.”

The writer makes it clear that love is not isolated nor is it alone, but it is followed with action keeping the commandments of God in our hearts. He has given us the commandment that we love one another, and has given us the Holy Spirit, our Counselor so we may be able to keep the commandments. Not only has He given us the commandments, He has given us the provisions to honor those commandments. He calls them the Spirit of Truth, our Counselor and our Guide so we will know what God wants us to do. We cannot plead ignorance. It is my prayer today that you are walking in the truth; and your love for God is expressed through your love for Him, your love for others and your willingness to keep His commandments.
