Judge Not
Today’s devotion continues to be about Christian ethics, for we are called to a higher standard. We have been called to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13-16). We cannot judge others about the speck in their eyes when we have a plank in our own eyes (Matthew 7:3-5). Yesterday’s devotion talked about anger. Today we follow up with a call to not judge others. We have all found ourselves in some situation where we have judged others, but thank God for His mercy that looks beyond our faults and sees our needs. In Luke 6:37, we find these words:
“’Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.’”
Jesus calls upon those who judge to be aware that they may be faced with that same judgment. Luke tells us that if we want forgiveness, we must be willing to forgive others. Think of the words in the Lord’s Prayer “…and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us … (Matthew 6:12). None of us can stand the judgment of God. We all need His mercy. So, as we have received His mercy, let us show mercy to others, and judge not.
