GODLY COUNSEL
As we are faced with so many challenging experiences, we need God’s counsel to guide us. We can do nothing on our own. Wisdom is a gift from God. Too often we make decisions on our own, only to find ourselves in a mess. To make matters worse, sometimes we seek guidance from those who have no relationship with God, and they give us worldly advice. We have to be careful who we consult with for making decisions. We should consult God because He will guide us in the right direction. In Proverbs 27:9, we find these words:
“The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.”
The writer has some good advice. He says that someone who has been with God will be able to offer heartfelt counsel, because having a relationship with God has granted them wisdom. In this chapter, the writer makes clear what we should and should not do. He begins by saying, “Do not brag about tomorrow, since you don’t know what the day will bring.” He also says, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” When you get a chance, read this entire chapter. It has a lot to say about Godly counsel. He is a friend that will stick closer than a brother, and He will guide us with the counsel we need. We must always make sure that when we make decisions, they are made because of our counsel with God.
