We know from God’s Word that obedience is better than sacrifice. The truth, however, is that many of us are not obedient. Oh, we say that we love the Lord, but few of us are willing to follow His directions. He has given us a blueprint on how we are to live. He has requirements for our lives, and we must be willing to follow them. Early on, we are told to honor our mothers and fathers: God’s requirement. There are many others. In today’s devotion, we see how God delights in our obedience as found in Psalm 40:6:

 “You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand–you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.”

The psalmist responds to God’s goodness. On this Thanksgiving occasion, it was customary for an offering to be presented to express gratitude. The psalmist, however, declares that God does not seek sacrifices of this nature. Rather, God requires obedience.  It is clear that God is due our sacrifice; but here, God seeks our obedience. Read this entire psalm to see that animal sacrifice on the fire of the altar, was a sin offering. It is my prayer today that we will not omit offering God our sacrifices, but that we will first offer Him our hearts in obedience to His will and way
