Several years ago, I preached a series of sermons from a book I read by Joyce Myers. The series of sermons was entitled “Break Free from the Bondage of the Past.” in those sermons, I talked about how our past sometimes enslaves us. However, the good news is that Christ has set us free. There are no longer chains holding us. Our past cannot haunt us nor can our past rob us of our future. Whom God sets free is free indeed. John records this in John 8:36.
“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”
The writer of this passage makes it clear if God sets you free, you are truly free. This freedom is over sin and death. The word that keeps coming to mind is free, free, free, free. If you can, imagine what it is like to be chained or bound and then have the opportunity to be freed. So many people are slaves to sin, but God has released them. How tragic it is they have not discovered the joy of this freedom. If I were gifted with a voice to sing, right now I would sing, “Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.” It is my prayer today, you will live like one who has been set free by the hand of God, and you will enjoy the beauty of life with the freedom God has given. He has come that you might have life and life more abundantly.
