We do not have to live a lie! We can live a full and free life that honors God by having an intimate relationship with the Lord. We cannot live in denial, but live true to God and to ourselves. We cannot continue to tell ourselves, “I am not a bad person”, and then rattle off the things we do that justify our goodness. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We deceive ourselves when the truth is not in us. When we face the truth and look at ourselves in the mirror, it takes us away from judging others, for we realize our need for God. At times, we have been unfaithful to God and need to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness. John 8:32 reflects on God’s truth and being set free.

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Jesus tells his disciples, “‘you are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ ‘But we are descendants of Abraham,’ they said. ‘We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free?’ Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.’” They are debating about their faithfulness. They have not yet come to the truth of themselves. The Master says, “If the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” So, the same ones who are the descendants of Abraham were trying to kill Jesus for there was no room in their hearts for His message. They claimed to know and love the Master. But, they were not telling the truth. Let’s not be too hard on them, for some of us are not facing the truth. The good news today is that it is not too late. You can be set free by the love and mercy of God.
