Draw Near to God

I love the book of James. You will notice how many times I refer to James in these devotions. His writing is practical and says much about our relationship with God and with one another. He speaks of the need to call upon the elders to anoint the sick with oil (James 5:14-15). In today’s devotion, James talks of drawing near to God. As we draw near to God, He draws near to us to meet our every need. In James 4:8, we find these words:

“Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.”

It’s always good to read the surrounding verses before analyzing the text. James cautions us, in verse 7, to resist the devil and he will flee from you. Evil desires may be strong, but God is mightier and gives strength to all who submit to Him. He tells us, in verse 8, to cleanse our hands. We should humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord and we shall be lifted up. We are to look to God for the strength we need and God will give grace and mercy to all who seek Him. He will welcome us with open arms, meet our every need and cleanse us from all unrighteousness when we draw near to Him. Prayerfully, we have each discovered the blessings and joys that come when we draw near to God. Thank God today that He invites us to draw near to Him. Accept His invitation today.
