As a loving Heavenly Father, there are times when the Lord disciplines us. If we are honest, sometimes that discipline causes us to lose heart. Oh, we are good at receiving God is love, mercy, grace and forgiveness. Yet, when He corrects us, it is difficult for us to handle. We are like children. Those of us with children know that sometimes our children struggle with discipline. However, every parent at some point must discipline his or her children and so in love. When the Lord disciplines us, it is for our own good. That is hard to understand at that particular point. Ultimately, when we walk with God, we see the benefits of discipline. Never to lose heart when God corrects as we read in Hebrews 12:6:

“For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

In this deep and moving passage, we see how discipline is given in love. God knows our need to be disciplined, for without it we would continue in our own way. In our struggle with sin, we have to resist the temptation to go against God’s will. We can never escape the need for discipline. At our best, we still fall short. The flesh is weak and regardless of how much faith we have, we can succumb to satanic voices. My grandmother would tell me that discipline was for my own good. When she did discipline me she would say, it hurts me more than it hurts you. I often wondered about that, without realizing how much hurt I caused her because of my selfish ways. Her love for me was so strong that she had no other choice but to dissuade me from the destructive path I was on. God knows exactly what He is doing when He disciplines us. We might lose heart, but God’s heart toward us is evident in His gift of His Son to die for our sins. Be encouraged and know that when you do wrong, God will surely discipline you. However, remember, whatever you do, do not lose heart for His love is at work
