There are times I wish that I were an eloquent writer, to pen words that would convict, inspire and even warn us against the devil. He will take advantage of every opportunity we give to him. The devil will seize every moment to slip in and to steal our joy. When we become angry, we give the devil an opportunity to take our joy away. When we allow ourselves to be envious or greedy, we give the enemy more opportunities to take us out of God’s will. When we become hateful and resentful and fill our minds with racism and evil, we open the door for the devil to come in and to stay awhile. The devil will wreck our homes, our families and break our relationship with Jesus. We need always to be on guard and on watch, for he is cunning and clever. He even comes to church. Today’s scripture reference, Ephesians 4:27, speaks of him.

“for anger gives a foothold to the devil.”

There it is right in this passage of scripture. Paul indicates never to let the sun go down while you are still angry. That surely gives the devil more than enough to take advantage of us. Paul speaks of living as children of light and getting rid of bitterness, harsh words and evil behavior. Instead, he encourages kindness, tenderheartedness and forgiveness. Let me repeat what I said when I began this devotion. Don’t give the devil any opportunity! Check yourself by staying humble, working hard, being kind, staying on your knees and reading the Word of God. Practice living as a child of God. The Lord’s power is stronger than the devil’s. Don’t fool yourself; the devil is real. He is after you and me, and he won’t quit until he catches us. Therefore, be wise! Watch what you say and honor God every day.
