DON’T ALLOW JEALOUSY TO CONTROL YOU
It is my fervent prayer that our hearts are not filled with jealousy or envy. Many of us allow jealousy to control our lives. We harbor ill will and become bitter and angry. Let’s be clear — jealousy, envy, and greed are all sins. Our relationship with God is too important for us to carry jealousy and hatred in our hearts. Not only do we grieve God, but we do ourselves a great injustice. In James 3:14, we find these words:
“But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.”
James gives us true wisdom in this chapter, writing about the need to tame the tongue. He knows that those who harbor bitterness and jealousy will lash out with their tongue. He does not want the people of God to have any selfish ambitions, but rather live in a way that pleases God. It is my prayer, today that we live a life that is pleasing to God. There should be no space in our hearts for jealousy. Instead, as in verse 13, we should show that we “understand God’s ways, [and] prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works…” When we please God, we live a life of peace, love, and joy.
