It is important that we do not allow anything to separate us from the love of God. We may not worship images of bronze or gold, however, we place things and images before God. God is a jealous God, and wants our whole hearts, soul, and mind. Worldly things can allure us. Some of us have made images of material things. Some have created our relationships with others before God. To some, our work and pleasures have taken the place of God in our lives. Let me be transparent, I am not seeking to be self-righteous, but in reality, if we are not careful, we can find ourselves attracted to worldly pleasures. The flesh is weak and we may find ourselves placing things before God. I know that to be true, for at a time in my life, I allowed other things to come before God. Thanks be unto God this is no longer the case. I have learned that things I once thought were important are not now. Today’s scripture lesson is James 4:5.

“Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to Him.”

In this chapter, James writes about the need to draw close to God. James knows the importance of being faithful and not allowing our emotions to take us out of God’s will. He is aware of false attractions of the world. He knows what God’s Word says about the flesh. In this chapter, James writes of God’s resistance to the proud and gives grace to the humble. Pride and arrogance can cause one to rule out God from their lives. Therefore, from the depths of his heart, James writes to let nothing come before God, and to stay in the Word. The Spirit God has placed in the believer to be faithful to God. James tells them to humble themselves and resist the devil and he will flee. Do not allow the devil to take you out of God’s hands. Put God first in all that you do, and you will be blessed from on high.
