CHOOSE YOUR WORDS CAREFULLY

It is important that we pray and think before we speak. You notice I said pray first. Ask God to give you the right words to say. Think clearly about what you want to say. In other words, choose your words wisely. Many people have been hurt by words that were not first carefully prayed or thought about. I would argue that you cannot say everything you think; not only that, sometimes it is better to listen than to speak. If you have not chosen your words carefully, do not say anything. I have said on more than one occasion that we can hurt someone without saying one word of profanity. Words spoken in anger can pierce the soul. The Bible tells us how to choose our words carefully. The scripture reference for this devotion is found in Proverbs 18:20.

“Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction.”

In this deep and profound passage of scripture, we read of the blessings of good words. In this wisdom literature, the writer writes that the tongue can bring death or life. Those who love to talk will reap the consequences. What it really is saying is, do not talk too much and ensure that your words are wise. The right words bring healing, joy, and peace. They bring satisfaction. He also writes, “The mouths of fools are their ruins. They trap themselves with their lips.” When you get a chance read this entire chapter of Proverbs. It will give you insight for choosing your words. Fools words get them into quarrels. The next time that you speak, let the words in Proverbs be your guide.
