Build Yourself Up in the Faith
Today’s devotion speaks about the importance of building ourselves up in the faith. This requires discipline, perseverance, and a strong determination to grow in our walk with the Lord. Most of us know the time and effort that is required to engage in physical activities: our time spent in the gym, and all the things that will help build strong bodies and strengthen our muscles to keep our bodies fit. That same energy is needed as we build ourselves up in our faith. Our faith must grow. Yes, God blesses a childlike faith; but I would argue strongly, as we walk with God our faith should get stronger. We are working diligently everyday to build up our faith. The need to build up our faith is real. How do we build our faith? This is found in the Holy Writ for in Jude 1:20, we read these words:
“But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit,”
Jude appeals to those faithful followers of the Lord. He wants them to pray in the Spirit, for he recognizes the Holy Spirit gives us discernment and puts before us the things we need to pray for. The Holy Spirit gives us inspiration and we work under that inspiration so our lives might bear witness that we are the children of God. Throughout this chapter, the writer speaks clearly about humbling one’s self: keeping oneself in the love of God and then having holy faith that will last through tough times. It is God’s desire for His children to have a faith that will produce holiness, so they will not be tossed to and fro’ by every wind and doctrine, that blows our way. Rather, we will have a deep and abiding faith, so that when trials and troubles come, our faith will be strong and secure and we will stand, depend, and trust in God. It is my fervent prayer that you will be so strong in your faith that you will not be moved.
