It is important for believers to be realistic and holistic in their living, so they do not live their lives like a fairy tale. We need to be fully aware of what is taking place in our lives as well in the lives of others. All of us will go through our own trials and troubles. This is a fact that we cannot escape. Therefore, there is no need to live in denial but to live as honest and realistic as possible knowing that no matter our trials, God is there with us. John 16:33, our scriptural text, reads in this manner:
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
In this moving passage of scripture, Jesus, the Master Teacher speaks to His disciples. He tells them that His departure is at hand, and that after a while they shall see Him again. Jesus does not want them to be misled, and to know the truth that they will also experience trials. He tells them to take heart for He has overcome the world. What powerful words! I know that when trials and troubles come, we can become angry, deny them, and respond as if they do not exist. However, we have confidence that the God we serve will turn our sadness into joy. Therefore, we are realistic knowing that troubles will come and we are assured that our God can handle them all.
