Sometimes we forget the God we serve and love is a jealous God, demanding our complete love. We still have other gods we may not be aware of: gods of materialism, the flesh, loved ones, and a host of other gods.  He is not satisfied with love that is divided between Him and other gods. Prayerfully, you love and honor no other gods more than our one true God. This does not take anything away from our loving our family; however, it elevates our love to Him who has given the gifts.  Having other gods is not new, for we remember the words of today’s scripture found in Exodus 20:5 where we find these words:

“You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.”

These words strike at the heart of our devotion, for they speak of God being a jealous God and that no one should create a greater image.  The writer makes it clear how the Lord has blessed the people bringing them out of the land of Egypt.  They have been set free and delivered by the mighty hand of God, yet many of them were worshipping other gods. Israel was surrounded by people who worshipped other gods. They are cautioned not to follow this practice and to worship Yahweh only.  People who also worship other gods surround us. We cannot conform to them for He must be our God.  We must always keep in mind that as much as He loves us He is also jealous.  He has made it clear that our first allegiance must be to Him.  Prayerfully you have made up your mind to put Him first in all things and that He is the love of your life.  No one can love you like the Lord and hopefully, you love no one like you love the Lord.
