As I write this devotion, I am mindful of the many nights I have stayed awake unable to sleep. In this last year and a half of Coronavirus, I cannot count the many nights when I have tossed and turned with so many things on my mind. I know I am not alone. I have tried many things to relieve my stress at night. I have even gone to bed early to only find myself awake and unable to go back to sleep. To make matters worse, some of those sleepless nights have produced negative thoughts. There is nothing like a good night’s sleep for your health and mind. A Word in Psalm 4:8 reminds us of a good night’s sleep.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.

In this moving passage, the psalmist is clear that he can sleep in peace for the Lord is with him. When you read this chapter, he begins by calling on the Lord as he deals with troubles. He does not want sin to overtake him and so he speaks to God with a spirit of gratitude knowing that the Lord is with him. He is able to lie down and sleep throughout the night for he is aware of God’s presence. He has received the joy the Lord has given him despite the obstacles he faces. Read this entire psalm. It will help you when you cannot sleep, and it will help you to have a good day when you awaken in the morning. The Lord is our Shepherd we shall not want. He makes us rest in the night and have joy in the morning.
